Abstract

Background: The results of the 2018 Riskesdas stated that breastfeeding for infants aged 0-5 months in Indonesia was 37.3% below the 2018 Ministry of Health Strategic Plan target of 40%. Breastfeeding counseling is an effective intervention for the community to increase the rate of exclusive breastfeeding and breastfeeding. Breastfeeding counseling using online media can be used as an alternative to face-to-face communication during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Objective: To identify the effectiveness of using online media on the success of counseling for breastfeeding mothers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Methods: This study used quantitative analytic and case control design with a retrospective approach. The population was 94 breastfeeding mothers who conducted counseling and a sample of 30 people in each group based on inclusion criteria with probability sampling techniques. The data were analyzed using the Mann Whitney test and the effectiveness value with the Simple Regression Test.

Results: From the results of the Mann Withney test, it was obtained a p-value of 0.010 <0.05, with the conclusion that there was a difference in the median of successful counseling in the case group (online media) and the control group (offline media). Based on the regression test the coefficient of determination (R Square) is 0.577, meaning that the effect of online media on the success of counseling is 57.7%, while 42.3% is influenced by other factors.

Conclusion: The use of online media is quite effective in the success of counseling for breastfeeding mothers during the Covid-19 pandemic. Electronic communication has the potential to provide additional opportunities for counselors to inform, convince, encourage and support breastfeeding mothers, especially in the counseling process.
